Einstein Meets Members of the Hebrew University (at his home in Princeton, N.J.)

I was a bit surprised when I saw this somewhat rare photo taken of Einstein in 1950.   This was a full five years before he passed away.  Clearly, he looks frail and maybe a bit disinterested (although this may have just caught him at a bad moment).   Early in his life, Einstein not only refused to comb his hair, but also did not like to wear socks (also shown in this photo).

There is a story told by one of the paramedics that took Einstein to the hospital just before he died.   While in the ambulance, Einstein, trying to lighten the moment and make conversation asked the young man what he was studying, to which he replied "Economics".  Einstein reportedly paused and said, "Economics? ... I don't know anything about that".

In 1955, Einstein had been sick and pretty much knew he was nearing the end.  But he had no plans to go to a hospital.  It wasn't until a friend told him how upset his personal secretary (Ms. Helen Dukas) was, that he finally agreed to go.  He wanted her to feel better.
